From Floppy Disks to the Cloud: A Journey Through Tech Since 1993
Nineteen ninety-three. A time when technology was a luxury and the phrase "cutting edge" applied to a computer the size of a small kitchen appliance. Let us take a little stroll down memory lane, back to a world where PCs cost more than some used cars and a good setup required a dedicated chunk of your home real estate.
The $5,000 Machine That Ruled the Room
Picture a massive desk groaning under the weight of a PC tower that doubled as a space heater, a monitor the size of a small TV (and about as heavy), and an endless tangle of cords. And the tethered mouse, complete with a ball you had to clean because it collected lint.
That $5,000 price tag did not even include the ergonomic chair you needed after hunching over to dial into the internet for hours.
Floppy Disks That Were Not Actually Floppy
Remember those 3.5-inch floppy disks? They were everywhere. Despite the name, they were not floppy at all. These little wonders held a whopping 1.44 MB of data, which was just enough space for a single Word document and maybe an image if you were feeling adventurous.
We carried them around like digital currency, terrified of losing or corrupting one. And the horror of accidentally erasing your entire science project? Genuinely traumatic.
The Modem: The Original Sound of Progress
Then came the dial-up modem. That glorious symphony of screeches and squawks as it connected to the internet. Each connection attempt felt like summoning a digital genie. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it did not.
And when it did? AOL's "You've Got Mail!" Suddenly checking email was an event, not just a task.
AOL: The Gateway to the Internet
AOL chatrooms were the social media of the era. That was where you found your people, whether you were debating the best episode of Seinfeld or crafting the perfect away message with just the right song lyrics. A lost art.
From Clunky to the Cloud
Fast forward to today and it is hard to believe how far we have come. We carry more computing power in our back pockets than that $5,000 machine ever dreamed of. Floppy disks have been replaced by the cloud, modems are a distant memory, and instead of waiting for one email, we are managing dozens of apps, platforms, and notifications simultaneously.
Technology has made running a business exponentially easier. It has also made it more complex in ways that 1993 Beth could not have imagined.
Why This Matters for Your Business Today
I have been working with technology since the floppy disk era. I have watched it evolve from something only specialists could manage to something every small business owner is expected to understand and maintain.
The pace of change is not slowing down. Platforms update, algorithms shift, AI tools multiply, and your website needs regular attention to stay visible, functional, and current.
That is where I come in. I keep the technology running so you can focus on your clients. If you want to talk about what that looks like for your business, schedule a free consultation.
May you always Find Your North Star.
